Listening to an audiobook counts as reading. I stand by that statement 1000%. Audiobooks have gotten me through the last few years when too busy to be able to sit down and devote myself to a written book. After asking friends on Instagram for suggestions I landed on listening to Kristin Hannah’s The Four Winds.

Read on for my thoughts on The Four Winds and for the other suggested titles shared by my friends on Instagram!

About The Four Winds Audiobook

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah is a historical fiction novel (not usually my style) that centers around Elsa Martinelli, a Texan woman living through, “hard times.” Set in the time of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, The Four Winds certainly puts into perspective the hard we are living through right now. It highlights many of the same plights that we are facing, but all without the advantage of internet, electricity, and running water.

The audio version is narrated beautifully by Julia Whelan.

Two different people suggested this audiobook so I had to give it a shot. I didn’t even look up the summary before purchasing—gotta love having extra Audible credits to burn. I needed a good “read” for a long car ride by myself and thought that two recommendations would seal the deal.

The Four Winds: Heartbreaking, Inspiring Look at Female Amecianism

First, I really was engaged by the book. Second, it was NOT the audiobook for a long car ride alone. SO MANY TEARS. It is also not a book for young ears.

I really felt drawn by Elsa’s no-nonsense manner, her desire to be loved, her hard-working heart, and the sacrifices she made as a mother. I was moved by the parallels painted between some of the frustrations of now and those of back when.

It was hard not to think of recent events when listening to the characters repeat the phrase, “this is not America.” Anyone looking to escape from the politics of today may want to hold off for a bit on this audiobook. However, if you want a good kick in the pants of “it could be worse” then listen as soon as possible.

The story alternates, and not exactly deftly, between Elsa’s character and that of her daughter as the story moves on. I wasn’t a huge fan of this. In general, I’m not a fan of changing between characters unless it is very pronounced– for instance as a chapter changes. I admit that this transition possibly happened, but I didn’t know as a listener instead of a reader.

In the end, the daughter’s perspective was needed and a vital part of the story. Her experience gave a depth that the story couldn’t have had otherwise.

Last Words

In the author’s note at the end of the novel, Kristen Hannah writes about this time we are in.

“As we know, there are lessons to be learned from history, hope to be derived by hardships faced by others. We’ve gone through bad times before and survived, even thrived. History has shown us the strength and durability of the human spirit. In the end, it is our idealism, and our courage, and our commitment to one another—what we have in common—that will save us.”

That stayed with me long after I was done listening. If you like historical fiction or stories about strong women I recommend this book.

Necessity breeds creativity. The need for movement for the whole family created a variety of creative solutions. Our favorite, and prettiest solution of the bunch was the creation of a home gym in our home’s mudroom space. This DIY home gym included a change of flooring, paint, and a space styled with the goal of inspiring movement.

When the long-lasting reality of the pandemic began to dawn on our family we ended our monthly gym membership and decided to focus those funds elsewhere. In the beginning we were spending plenty of time outdoors and getting our exercise by working in the yard or going on hikes. We even purchased an above-ground pool that we used as much as possible in the short Spokane Summer season.

Then winter hit…and, boy, did it hit hard! We quickly realized that we really needed a more complete space to complete our daily workouts. Our under-organized and over-stuffed gym/mudroom/office/laundry space just wasn’t cutting it. So, after some hemming and hawing from the husband, we started in on our first time doing flooring along with some other DIY efforts to make this multi-purpose space into a true home gym.

The Before: An Actual Dumping Ground

The gym still serves as a second home office, laundry room, and mudroom. It just looks a lot better doing it all. Read on for the makeover highlights and supply list.

I only have a few photos of the before of this room, but check out my Instagram for a video of the whole transformation! (Follow me @JenniBost)

Our mudroom houses a laundry room area that is unfinished. We did not tackle that space in this makeover, but have plans for the future! The rest of the space is actually quite large at 16’X9′. We have used this space in the past as an extra guest room, a storage room, an indoor bike space, and an extra home office.

The Needs for Our Refresh:

In future posts I’ll go into the flooring and some of my DIY artwork in more detail, but for now, here are the basics for what our refresh required:

  • Flooring: The flooring was the biggest eye-sore in this space as it was a cheap cream carpet that got some good wear-and-tear from the traffic coming in from the backyard and garage. Eventually, we would like to redo the flooring in the entire house, so this was a good opportunity to learn a new DIY skill.
  • Paint: Much of our house was painted a version of white that had a cream base. I like a brighter, cooler white. So, paint needed to happen. As much as I love color, I chose white to help keep this space feeling relaxing.
  • Storage: The space previously had hap-hazard storage that was filled to the brim with anything that didn’t really have a home. We needed to create homes for those items and make sure we had space to store our every-day home gym equipment.
  • Decor: Gotta have something on the walls to help inspire us!

The After: Our Very Own Home Gym

The best part of any DIY is the before and after photos, right? I’m really proud of this little room.

The flooring isn’t perfect. I’m sure that if someone looked closely they would see our mistakes in getting things spaced just right. However, it is 1000% better than what was there before and it was our first try at flooring. I’m trying to rest in that instead of being frustrated that it isn’t pro-quality.

It has been so nice to go in and get in a good sweat session. We, unfortunately, did not have room for my indoor bike, so that resides in my office still. However, we were able to mount a TV for things like Yoga– we have a large space that is completely empty aside from a rug for us to do non-machine workouts. We were able to get in our treadmill and my husband’s indoor bike.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my new DIY gym space. I hope you found some inspiration in the pictures.

What questions do you have about the space?

Do you know what I couldn’t have predicted in a million years when I was thinking through the potential roadblocks for hitting my goals last year when working on my 2020 blogging plans? A global pandemic.

TL;DR: This year had me down and out, but I’m excited to be back blogging again. I have a list of things I plan on sharing including some home projects and Covid-safe celebrations. I’d love to know what YOU wish to see in my upcoming posts… cause, after all, this blog is for you! Please take a moment to fill out this SUPER short form to let me know what you want to see!

It has been nearly a year since my last post. I stopped posting around March 16th which was a week after lockdown began for me. At the time I even hired a few people who had lost their jobs due to the lockdown with full intentions of continuing my work here. Thing is… my day job is in healthcare.

These rolling 12 months have been some of the hardest working months of my life. Harder than 4 jobs and full-time college courses. Harder than changing careers. Harder than going back after having a baby. And, me… I had it good compared to others in my field.

After sometimes 70 hours of looking at computers for my day job—often dealing with things like Covid restrictions, angry online commenters, fear for coworkers, etc.—the idea of looking at a computer for my own work felt almost impossible. But, even when I got around the gumption to open my laptop I’d sit there and stare at a screen not knowing what to write.

This year it felt like work to celebrate.

This blog has always been a space about celebration in one way or another. Even though I knew people would want to have ways to celebrate safely, things to cook for a family, ways to connect over the internet… I knew that those would be good and appropriate things to write about. I just couldn’t celebrate.

Finally though, finally I see a bit of light at the end of this long tunnel. I don’t know what my head will do with this year and how it will translate in this blog. For now though, I thought I’d share a few highlights from the year that I hope to share in more detail over the next few months.

Coming Soon: Home Projects

Being at home and unable to stare at a computer any more than I already was… I did a lot of home improvement projects! We made improvements in several spaces this year and I am proud of our DIY spirit and the overall results. Recent home projects include:

Coming Soon: My Society 6 Shop

I’ve been using art as a coping mechanism my entire life. This year it has become essential. I’ve started putting some of my recent designs into a Society6 shop and am working on a few more fun projects. The Society6 Shop is live, but I plan on sharing more of my work this year.

Coming Soon: Food and Cocktails

Girl’s gotta eat. With the entire family home all day, every day I have for sure been cooking up a storm of recipes. From seasonal drinks to weeknight eats, I plan to share my favorites.

Coming Soon: Tips for Safe Celebrations

While there is light at the end of the tunnel we are looking at possibly years of needing to be safer in our celebrations. Even when the world goes back to normal I hope that some things like Zoom parties stay around occasionally so that we can celebrate with people that are too far to get together in person. This year we did zoom parties for birthdays and (when it was allowed) very small outdoor, socially distanced get togethers with friends.

While there is plenty to share, I really don’t want to share things unless it will be of use and interest to you! So, please take just a moment to fill out this very short form as to what you’d like to see out of A Well Crafted Party in 2021!

Thank you… and, here is to a better 12 months than the last!
