I’m notorious for entering competitions and signing me and my. husband up for things that he isn’t quite in the know about and having to explain it to him later. He is ALWAYS an excellent sport. He, after all, has been my partner in crime for over two decades now! Well, when I applied to America’s Favorite Couple, a philanthropic competition hosted by Jeff and Emilie Goldblum, my lovely husband had no clue. But, as always, he is along this ride with me and we’re actually in the running!

How we met: Brian and I were a blind date. Well, we were supposed to be a blind date but we met BEFORE the blind date and then had the awkward back and forth of does he (does she) like me. We were put together by two college friends who knew I was a serial dater – didn’t want to be in the long game with anyone and he was about to graduate. Twenty years later we still have them to thank.

Me with my Grandparents on my wedding day. They met on a blind date, just like me and Brian!

Fun story: My grandparents were set up on a blind date as well. They stood the test of time and will always be an inspiration to us!

Favorite Memory: There are too many favorite memories. We’ve had two beautiful children together. We’ve made homes together. We’ve traveled together. But, I think one of my ultimate favorite memories is the trip we made from Oklahoma to Portland in a UHaul truck. We said we’d move and decided on Portland sight unseen. None of our friends and family (and somewhat US) really believed we’d do it, but we did!

The tagline: Our pre-marital counselor said,” you should break up now or you’ll be together forever.”

Brian commits to things like no one I’ve ever met. When he sets his mind to something he is going to do it, but our relationship did not start out as a commitment. (See photos from our wedding!)

When we were introduced, the plan was to break up when Brian graduated. And, we did! But, we then became friends. He lived across the country and we wrote (old school letters) and talked early in the morning on the phone. That friendship is really the basis of what we have together rather than the first few months we dated. When he moved back to Oklahoma we spent time just being friends, being dorky with each other and not caring if we didn’t look attractive or if we said the wrong thing. To this day he is the one person I can be utterly myself with. We of course (spoiler!) found our way to each other romantically again.

Wedding Newspaper Headline: Casual Intentions Lead to Marriage

When we got engaged, coming from a family of divorce, I really wanted to have pre-marital counseling. As a bonus, Oklahoma gave discounted marriage licenses to those who had pre-marital counseling and my school offered 8 free sessions. It was hands down the best decision! Pre-marital counseling had us thinking about what we valued and wanted in life. It allowed us to share that with each other and decide to commit to the other person’s goals and hopes as well as our own. At the very last session our pre-marital counselor, obviously understanding Brian’s ability to commit wholly and also recognizing the passionate (read: volatile, changeable, enthusiastic) person I am, gave us a warning. He said that we should break up right then and there, or we’d be together forever.

One of the many things that came out of that pre-marital counseling, besides utter commitment to surviving and thriving, was a joint mission. One of my core values is to be generous. To be generous of my time, my talents, and where I can, my money. Brian always fit into that value as he is so generous in spirit. He has a passion for the earth and for people that is unmatched. Together we spend our married life trying to be generous to those around us. Some of that you see on this blog, but some is so personal that no one but he and I will ever know about it.

Brian and Jenni Bost America's Favorite Couple 20 years ago
Brian and Jenni in 2004

When I applied to America’s Favorite Couple I thought it was funny and I needed a distraction from medical issues. When I found out we were accepted, my jaw dropped and I had to figure out how to tell Brian he was going to be online for a couple’s competition. However, the easiest thing to get both he and I onboard for this competition is the great causes it is raising money for!

The two causes very much represent Brian and Jenni. I am passionate about food security and food banks. I grew up needing the generosity of food banks, food kitchens, free school meals, and the like. Brian is an avid environmentalist who loves wildlife. The California Regional Food Bank and Oceana groups that this competition is raising awareness and funds for are a great reason to be a part of this competition.

So, please vote for us. Please vote for us and donate to these two worthy causes!

My husband and I got married right after I graduated college in 2006. We didn’t have much of a budget or really any clue what we would really want in a wedding or large party. It was pre-Pinterest after all. We had a beautiful low-budget wedding with our friends and family that sparked my interest in throwing events. This party was ten years in the making and I am so excited to share the photos by Mary Boyden of our 10th Anniversary Party Decor!

Why we decided to throw a 10th Anniversary Party…

Over the course of the years we grew our family and became close with new friends who didn’t know us back when we got married. We knew that when our ten year anniversary came along that we’d like to take a moment to not only celebrate us, but to celebrate our friends and family a bit. We wanted to say thank you to those who had helped us make it the past few years as we have experienced the ins and outs of life. We believe in love and romance. But, we also believe in working on a relationship and the importance of a great support system. This 10th anniversary party was really our way of getting to say thank you.

The look of the party has changed in my head over time, and didn’t really get solidified until I chose our venue, but I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way that it turned out. It was everything I had dreamed it would be and so much more. I still sit and dream about this day at times!

10th Anniversary Party Decor at Andina Restaurant in Portland, Oregon from A Well Crafted Party

Chosen venue for our 10th Anniversary Party in Portland, Oregon

We picked Andina for our party venue for a variety of reasons, one of which was that we LOVE the food and the other being that the Tupai room is a gorgeous space that fit our party perfectly. Once we chose Andina, with their clean modern venue space and bright dishes, I knew that we wanted to have a bold, clean and whimsical design.

Favorite 10th Anniversary Party Decor Details

Paper goods.

I LOVE paper goods. Designing digital goods for events has been a huge passion of mine. It honestly was the most exciting part of the event for me as well as the most difficult. Once I finally nailed down the invitation designs that got me excited everything else fell into place seamlessly. I designed all the paper items and printed and trimmed them through a local print shop. I then put together the details by hand. It helps that this was a party for 35 rather than 300!

Flowers.

My second favorite detail were the flowers. I knew I wanted to order some bright, slightly whimsical arrangements, but hadn’t landed on a style until I found these fun geometric terrariums at Target. I then found the perfect mix of blooms through FiftyFlowers.com and built my arrangements using floral foam to help keep them sturdy. The larger arrangements featured blooms inside and outside of the terrarium. (Post coming soon!)

Programs.

At our wedding I had created newspaper programs about the two of us since I had gone to school for journalism. For this party I created small magazines featuring our story, photos, order of events and our vows. We featured the newspaper on one of the tables so that guests could look through the past a bit. Escort Table.

We wanted the party to be fun for our guests so we chose a “party animal” theme to help guide guests to their tables. We spray painted toy animals and gave the centerpiece animals a bit of a party upgrade with hats and bows. Each table had a different animal and the escort cards had the corresponding animal on them to let guests know where to go as they entered. We also had a fun photo backdrop created by using black and white 4X6 photos. Guests used an Instax camera to take pictures of themselves in front of the wall of photos from the past ten years. (Post coming soon!)

Favors.

Our favors were bright yellow tote bags that read, “By the way, I’m wearing the smile that you gave me.” They had a tag that read, “Enjoy a midnight snack. Salty and sweet, just like your friendship, an absolute treat!” We included a LaCroix flavored water along with a bag of chips and homemade sugar cookies. (Post coming soon!)

Memory Photobooth Backdrop

Photo Booth.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to have a photo booth. I also knew that I wanted to commemorate the many memories and people in our lives somehow. I decided to pull the two together and create a photo-wall photo booth. It is perhaps my favorite backdrop I’ve done yet. I can’t wait to share more… post coming soon!

Today my husband and I celebrate seven  years of marriage. So far, there is no itch. 🙂

I honestly can’t even believe that we’ve been married for seven years! Besides my creaky knees and added weight I often feel like I am still 22 and walking down that aisle. I’m still head over heels for my husband of which I’ve seen and smelled farts, endured many stomach flus alongside, and spent several sleepless nights with while tending to our screaming child. Living with and loving someone isn’t all roses and chocolates. There have been many ups and many downs. I can truthfully say today that I am SO glad I married this man. I’m so thankful to be loved by him.
