Frequently Asked Questions

Hosting & Party Planning Basics

A Well Crafted Party is a lifestyle and entertaining blog for people who love planning intentional, memorable experiences—whether that’s hosting a dinner party at home, planning a destination wedding, organizing a family vacation, or cooking cozy weeknight meals.

Created with the modern hostess and home entertainer in mind, A Well Crafted Party especially resonates with women ages 30–50 who enjoy:

  • Planning home events and parties (from intimate dinner parties to holiday gatherings and milestone celebrations)
  • Travel planning, including weekend getaways, family trips, and destination celebrations
  • Wedding planning and pre-wedding events like bridal showers, engagement parties, and bachelorette weekends
  • Home cooking and baking, from easy entertaining recipes to crowd-pleasing appetizers and cocktails
  • Home décor and DIY projects that make everyday spaces feel thoughtful, welcoming, and “party ready”

Through party ideas, travel tips, entertaining guides, DIY projects, and recipes, A Well Crafted Party is here to help you “craft” celebrations—big and small—that feel personal, beautiful, and doable in real life.

There are so many right answers to this question! But, for me… in most things, I always start with the WHY.

When you’re planning a party from scratch, start with your “why” and your vibe. Are you hosting a cozy dinner party at home, a big birthday bash, a casual brunch, or a themed tasting party? Once you know why you’re celebrating and how you want guests to feel, decisions about guest list, budget, menu, and décor become a lot easier.

From there, set a realistic budget, choose a date and time, and make a guest list that actually fits your space. Then pick a simple theme or color palette, plan a crowd-pleasing menu (store-bought shortcuts welcome), and layer in a few thoughtful details—like a signature drink, a DIY favor, or a simple printable—to make it feel like “a well crafted party” without a ton of stress. On A Well Crafted Party, you’ll find real-life examples like brunch parties, whiskey tastings, graduation celebrations, and kids’ birthdays that walk through exactly how I bring those steps to life.

For a deeper dive into the planning process, you can read my “Planning a Well Crafted Party: The 5 Ws and How” post, where I break down the who, what, when, where, why, and how of party planning so you can build a celebration that feels intentional from start to finish.

As soon as possible! Some of my events I plan a few weeks out and others have been in planning mode for a year or more. It depends on the type of event and the needs of the event.

For example, a larger event with a lot of vendors and a venue rental you may need a year or more to plan. Smaller events at home where people know they are coming already (annual events, etc.) you can really put together quite quickly!

A good rule of thumb, when able, is to plan at least 90 days in advance.

Beauty as they say is in the eye of the beholder. Make your guests feel comfortable, keep your space clean and clutter free, and add intentional details that pull the event together cohesively and you’ll achieve beauty. Investing in pieces over time that you can use over and over again, will also help you pull off fantastic events with little cost.

Short FAQ Answer (1–2 paragraphs)

What are your best tips for planning parties in small spaces or apartments?

When I’m planning parties in small spaces or apartments, I focus on flow, zones, and a few high-impact details. Start by trimming the guest list to what your space can comfortably handle, move furniture to open up clear traffic paths, and create simple “zones” for drinks, food, and activities so people naturally spread out instead of crowding the kitchen.

Then keep the menu and décor small-space friendly: think easy, mostly handheld foods, self-serve drink stations, and décor that goes vertical (walls, shelves, doors) or does double-duty, like centerpieces that are also favors or printables that label food and dress up store-bought items. Many of my real parties (like this film themed bridal shower) were hosted in apartments or modest spaces, and they show how thoughtful layouts, themed focal points, and budget-friendly details can turn even a tiny home into the perfect spot for a well crafted party.

To make a party fun for both adults and kids, build in “layers”: a kid-focused activity zone, flexible food and drink options everyone enjoys, and a few grown-up touches just for the adults. For example, in my Easy Rock and Roll 4th Birthday Party, kids decorated paper guitars and sang karaoke while adults enjoyed pizza, salad, and conversation, and in my First Birthday Activity Ideas I share how we balanced baby playtime and story time with plenty of snacks and beverages for the grown-ups.

I also love adding shared activities—like coloring pages at the table in Color Me Yours, or a big cake moment—so kids and adults have something to enjoy together while still letting each group have their own fun.

  1. Why do you write about lifestyle when your blog name is “A Well Crafted Party”? What started out as purely a party blog evolved when life started being less about elaborately designed events on a budget and more about, well… life. I originally tried to keep up two blogs— a lifestyle blog and a party blog. But, splitting my readership and my focus was difficult to keep up with and impossible to promote. I thought about changing the blog name to A Well Crafted Life. But, all in all, I believe that life is a big ole party and we should celebrate each part of it, so I kept the blog name and haven’t looked back.
  2. I found you through free blogging printables, but am not really interested in the rest of it. How do I follow along for just blogging-related items? I’ve tried to split off my talk of blogging from this site to its own home at, www.awellcraftedblog.com. It is not updated as much as this site, but if you want my blogging advice, that is where I put it!
  3. I’d like for you to promote my product/business. How do I get featured on your blog? Please check out my sponsorship page for more information on the promotion of your product or business.
  4. Can I guest post for you? I do not currently accept guest postings on my blog. If you are a company looking to publish a post about your product please know that my blog policies do not allow me to publish sponsored posts written by anyone but myself. I do offer different advertising that can feature your product. Visit my sponsorship page for more info.
  5. I like this printable on your site, but would like something changed… can you do that for me? I’d honestly love to personalize every set of printables, because I believe personalization is a special treat for parties, life, and business. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to do that for everyone that asks. I do offer customization and printable design services and would be happy to help personalize a set of printables for a small fee to help pay for my time. Check out my services page for more information.
  6. How do you make your printables? I love this question! I make my printables using Adobe products. I utilize Photoshop, Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign the most. There is a learning curve with using these platforms, but I sorta feel like once you learn one the rest are pretty easy to pick up. I’ve used Adobe products for 15 years now.

    • However, I believe that you can make a great printable using a variety of products including Microsoft Word, Apple Pages and on-line tools such as Canva or PicMonkey.
  7. Can I share your posts? Thanks so much! I’d love for your to share! But, please be respectful of the time and effort that goes into creating my content. Do not share posts in their entirety. Do not share recipes in their entirety. You are welcome to use one image from a post with proper credit and link to my site. Please do not take an image off of my site to illustrate YOUR content and write “source” underneath it. It doesn’t do either of us any good. If you’d like to share printables then please link back to the printable post and do not share my printable files or a link to my printable file on your site. Again, I really appreciate you sharing my work. As always sharing on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest with proper links back are encouraged! Hashtag something you’ve created based off of my post with #AWellCraftedParty so that I can share as well!
  8. Who did your blog photos? My good friend and amazing family photographer, Macey Snelson Photography, took the images that I have used throughout the blog on my headers and within my main pages. Blog post photos are done by myself unless otherwise specified. I’ve been lucky enough to get to work with a variety of great Portland photographers on a variety of posts. Check out my Portland page for more info.
  9. How can I hire you for my event/business/blog? I offer a variety of services on a case-by-case basis depending on my current workload. Those services may include anything from customization of printables to the creation of business products and simple, but time-consuming tasks such as email response and blog post optimization. Visit my services page for more information.
