It’s graduation season! This is one of my favorite party seasons because it is such a special reason for celebration. Such hard work is put into getting to the point of graduation. These types of celebrations don’t come around too often so it is the perfect excuse to throw a party.

Last year I had the pleasure of hosting a graduation/ 30th birthday celebration for my friend Lih.

I wanted the color scheme to reflect the summer season, but also wanted to celebrate the years spent in school by incorporating the school colors. Thankfully the school colors were green and white which made it easy to do this fun floral scheme. We chose to celebrate with a brunch due to timing of everyone coming in to town and because brunch is just so tasty!

Host a Graduation Brunch

We chose to do a brunch buffet due to the size of the party. We really didn’t have the space to do a full sit-down brunch. This way we were able to put a food table together and then a nice bar area. I tried to keep the food items to easy-to-eat sizes. I mixed it up with some homemade treats and some store-bought treats.

And, because it was also a birthday party we served an amazing birthday bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Mini Yogurt Parfaits

I found these fun mini bowls and mini cups and instantly knew I wanted to do some sort of yogurt parfaits or trifle. I bought these well before I even knew what type of party I’d be throwing. I basically want to keep these things stocked in my party closet for ever and always because they are so useful! They’d be perfect for a tasting party or cocktail party as well. See below for some similar mini partyware suggestions found on Amazon. (Affiliate Links)

Build your own mini yogurt parfaits:

I did two different types of yogurt parfaits. One was built with a Greek Honey Yogurt, honey flavored granola, peaches, and then a swirl of honey on top. The other I built with a Vanilla Yogurt, vanilla flavored granola, and berries. I simply made layers with each of the ingredients topping them off with a bit of garnish and a spoon.

Graduation Party - Bloody Mary Bar for a perfect addition to your graduation brunch | A Well Crafted Party

Elements to a DIY Brunch Bar

I wanted to give guests the opportunity to mix up their own brunch beverages easily and to their tastes. I set up a Bloody Mary Bar, Mimosa Bar, and Hot Beverage Bar. Each area had instructions and fixin’s to really make special drinks. I think my favorite was the Mimosa bar though because I did something I’ve never done before and it ended up being a hit! I froze the juice into ice cubes prior to the party which meant people were not trying to pour several juices into champagne glasses. Instead they simply grabbed a few ice cubes of the flavor of juice they wanted a topped with champagne. The juice slowly incorporated into the champagne and made for a truly delicious mimosa experience.

Set up your own Bloody Mary Bar:

Bloody Mary’s are one of my favorite brunch beverages. (See my past post on how to put together a Bloody Mary Bar.) For me the two things that really make a Bloody Mary wonderful are the spices and the garnishes. I often make my own Bloody Mary mix to taste with what I have on hand but usually starting with V8. There are some really fantastic pre-made mixes out there as well if you want to make thing easier on  yourself. The below steps will help build a nice Bloody Mary Bar for your next brunch:

  1. Put out vodka. I love Oregon made Crater Lake vodka for a budget friendly and smooth vodka option. Their pepper vodka is an absolute must for my Bloody Mary bars because it adds an extra bit of spice throughout the drink. I put out a bottle of both vodkas for this bar.
  2. Put out Bloody Mary Mix. A pre-made mix or simply V8 (with plenty of add-ins on the bar top) will work fine.
  3. Set out some add-in options such as hot sauces, pepper, hot chili flakes, worcestershire sauce, salt, celery salt, lemon wedges, etc.
  4. Set out garnishes. My go-to Bloody Mary Garnishes include celery stalks (works great for stirring my drink and then cools off my tongue from the spiciness of my drink) and basically anything pickled. I really like pickled asparagus and carrots in my Bloody Mary.
  5. Include glassware, tall spoons, a jigger and pour instructions. I used 12 oz glasses and suggested one jigger pour full ( 1.25 oz) of vodka over ice and then filling the glass with add-ins, Bloody Mary Mix, and garnishes.

We had so much fun celebrating our friend Lih and her accomplishments. I think that this party would be great for a graduation celebration, birthday brunch, or shower. Who doesn’t love brunch?

How did you celebrate your graduation? I’d love to hear… comment below!

I had the pleasure of participating in a pre-Thanksgiving potluck of sorts and share tips for the Ultimate Oregon Thanksgiving on The Simple Kitchen with Missy Maki this past weekend. Check out the two hour show for tips and LOTS of laughs. (I’m sharing tips in hour 1!) It would be a fun listen while you’re prepping your bird this Thanksgiving.

We had a star line up for the Ultimate Oregon Thanksgiving show including Ryan from Aria Gin, Bee from The Spicy Bee, Marlynn from Urban Bliss Life, Melissa from MelissaKaylene.com, Lindsay from Rosemarried, myself, and Missy Maki from The Simple Kitchen and Missy Maki Cooks. We all brought in foods and beverages to sample while speaking about Thanksgiving for two hours! A wonderful time was had by all.

The whole show was full of fantastic tips and really interesting double entendres! We discovered that you really can’t speak about the Thanksgiving meal without some funny double meanings.

Thanksgiving Tips from our Simple Kitchen Show:

There are a TON of tips on the Thanksgiving show, but the ones below are some of my favorite for having a stress-free potluck Thanksgiving:

Organization

Erin from BakeryBingo and Meredith from Martha Chartreuse called in and shared their party planning tips for hosting a holiday Friendsgiving brunch. One of the tips that really hit home was the tip to stay organized with all who are participating online through Google Docs. I also love the many different online potluck planning sites (like Perfect Potluck) for organizing your holiday meal.

Appetizers & Drinks

When people arrive and you are in the kitchen trying to get everything done and on the table hot you will want to have something to occupy your guests time. Absolutely put them to help if you have something to do, but more often or not you just need people out of the way! A batch cocktail and delicious appetizer will help keep guests busy.

Appetizer ideas:

  • – Lindsey shared details on her Brussels Sprouts and Shallot Dip that sounds (and looks) out of this world delish
  • – A beautiful charcuterie plate will WOW a crowed and keep everyone coming back for more. The above platter was created by the lovely Melissa of MelissaKaylene.com and it was a show stopper to say the least. Check out her tips on creating your own charcuterie platter.

Drink ideas:

Main Meal:

  • – Flip your turkey. You don’t want to let the turkey breast get dry!
  • – MASH your potatoes with a potato masher so that there are still some yummy chunks in there.
  • – DO NOT stuff your bird with your stuffing. Make the stuffing a delicious side. (This Sourdough Stuffing with Andouille from The Spicy Bee would fit nicely at your Thanksgiving table!)

Desserts:

  • – Keep it simple with a yummy holiday bark. It is easy to eat and isn’t too filling.
  • – Go ahead and buy that store made pie crust to save time. It’ll be okay. (Though, if you really want to make your own here are my tips on making the perfect pie crust!)

Thanksgiving Potluck Tips

Free Printable Thanksgiving Potluck Cards

While I am a fan of all food, I am also a fan of hosting a dinner party where everyone can feel comfortable eating and enjoying themselves within their own dietary restrictions. In a potluck situation it can be difficult to know what is in each dish. I don’t know about you, but I do NOT want to pull out an epi pen during Thanksgiving! These free printable Thanksgiving Potluck cards are an easy way for guests to know exactly what they are eating without having to find out and question each person who brought in a dish. Simply had each person a card and pen when they arrive and ask that they label their wonderful contribution for the safety and enjoyment of all attendees!

Have a happy, happy Thanksgiving!

Coffee is basically life… amiright? Well, it is pretty important in MY life if it isn’t quite an equivalent. I have coffee EVERY day. When I don’t want caffeine I drink decaf coffee. Coffee is a must. It is only natural that I bring my love of coffee and my love of cocktails together at times in creating tasty spiked coffee cocktails for brunches or night caps to fabulous dinner parties. While I absolutely love to craft wonderful more complicated coffee cocktails (and will share some of my favorite recipes soon) today’s post is sharing some of my favorite liquors to spike a coffee with to make a simple and satisfying coffee drink.

Easy to Make Spiked Coffee

To make spiked coffee you simply need to make a good cup of coffee— we typically use our french press* or pour-over*, but any good coffee maker will do— and introduce your favorite liquor. You can add cream and sugar (if needed) but, mainly, it is all about the coffee and liquor!

My favorite Coffee Add-Ins:

  • Amaretto — I’ve already professed my love for Amaretto in a past post. Amaretto is a sweet, almond-flavored liquor. This is good all by its lonesome with coffee or with just a touch of cream. (Side note: Amaretto makes an awesome ice cream topper too!)
  • Irish Cream — typically I use Bailey’s, but you can absolutely make your own Irish Cream! Irish Cream is just a mixture of cream, Irish Whiskey, and flavors of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla typically. If you use this in your coffee you can skip the cream and sugar entirely! Of course… you can always just spike your coffee with Irish Whiskey and add in the cream and sugar as needed. You won’t have some of the other flavors, but it will still be a delicious treat.
  • Coffee Liqueur— Some people think it is a tad silly to spike a coffee with a coffee flavored liqueur, but I think it is delicious. You can add in a touch of Kahlua or (one of my favorites) Crater Lake Spirit’s Hazelnut Espresso Vodka with a bit of cream and make a wonderfully decadent coffee.
  • Green Walnut Liqueur— What? I had never even heard of green walnut liqueur until a recent tasting introduced me to Stone Barn Brandyworks’ Nocino. We bought it on the spot. I’ve found that this is one of my favorite mixers in my coffee. A little Nocino, almond milk creamer, and coffee and you have a tasty night cap on your hands!
  • Whiskey— There is nothing more classic (or satisfying) than a bit of whiskey spiking a cup of coffee. This is a favorite treat especially while camping or sitting around a fire pit!

Okay, now I’m off to enjoy my Saturday. I’ve got my bullet journal (hello new organizing obsession), pens, and my favorite mug ready to go. Well, that and a splash of something tasty in my coffee. It is Saturday, after all!
